Wine-cellar special – Underground at Peck – a temple for wine-lovers

06 June 2008 - 09:45

Nei sotterranei di Peck, un tempio per i cultori del vino On entering Peck on via Spadari in Milan, you cannot fail to feel that sensation of wonderment so similar to that felt when we were children and we first heard tell of the magical carnival land in the original Pinocchio story. Going through the austere glass doors, a flimsy shield to the “gastronomical feast” beyond, it is difficult not to be overcome by thoughts of unrestrained gluttony and to dream of being locked in the shop at night-time, free to sample all the delights on display. Today, Peck covers 3,300 square metres over its three floors, all devoted entirely to satisfying the virtual and material needs of every connoisseur. The basement is a temple to wine-lovers: the enoteca, or wine-cellar, is situated here and has more than 14,000 bottles on display from all four corners of the world. This is just the tip of the iceberg as the cellar contains around 60,000 bottles. Customers are greeted by 7 wine experts attentive in assisting with the choice of the most suitable bottle or willing to act as guides - in all the main European languages, and also in Japanese and... in Milanese - during an impromptu wine-tasting. The tasting table is a priviledged place to appreciate a display of large bottles: Jeroboam (5 litres) and Imperial (6 litres) of Chateau Latour, Chateau D’Yquem, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Luce. Beside the wines are the sparkling wines and the champagnes in sizes up to an amazing Nebuchadnezzar (15 litres) of Pol Roger. At the table you can be guided by the experts over the sampling of a few wines served by the glass, amongst them a very rare Dom Perignon Rosé, or have any of the displayed bottles uncorked. The wine list available to customers features around 3,000 labels of which 45% are Italian, 35% French and the remaining 20% are from other countries. In the enoteca, in addition to the white wines, the reds, the rosé wines, dessert wines, sparkling wines and champagnes, there are the spirits including about 240 whiskies and 75 Armagnacs ranging in date from 1921 to the 1990s. If a customer doesn’t have enough time to cool the wine at home or if he is expected for dinner, he can choose from a special list of wines kept constantly at the correct temperature for serving.
